A child's first braiding appointment sets what they expect from every one after it. If it hurts, they remember. So we work at the pace the child can handle, not the pace the clock wants.

How we braid children's hair

A child's scalp is more sensitive than an adult's, not less, and the hair at their hairline is finer. That means larger sections, looser tension, and no style that pulls the edges back hard — however good it looks in the photo.

We work in short stretches with breaks. A restless child is not a problem to be solved by going faster; it is a signal to stop for a minute. Bring a tablet, a snack, and headphones.

If a style is going to be too tight or too heavy for your child's hair, we will say so before we start and offer something that suits it. A style that costs a child their edges at eight is not worth the two hours it saved.

Styles, beads and how long they last

Cornrows are the workhorse: two hours or less, four to six weeks of wear, and they survive PE, swimming and sleep better than anything else. Straight-backs or a simple pattern are the most-booked.

Box braids and twists suit older children who can sit longer and want more styling freedom. Beads and cuffs are an add-on and are worth doing properly — badly weighted beads pull, and children notice.

Expect four to six weeks. Children's hair grows faster than adults', so the roots lift sooner; take braids down at six weeks rather than stretching them to eight.

Booking around school and the working week

Back-to-school and the start of the holidays are the two busiest windows of the year — book those two to three weeks out.

Kids' appointments are short compared to a full adult install, so they fit into the parts of the day a five-hour knotless set cannot. Ask about the earliest slot if a long sit is going to be hard.

Families come to us from Gaithersburg, Montgomery Village, Rockville and Germantown. Siblings booked back to back are easier on everyone than two separate trips.

Kids Braids in Gaithersburg — common questions

How much are kids braids in Gaithersburg? +
From $45 to $155 depending on the style, the length and whether beads are added. Extension hair is either brought by you or added on in-salon.
How long will my child need to sit? +
Ninety minutes to three hours depending on the style. Cornrows are the quickest. We work in stretches with breaks rather than pushing straight through.
What age do you braid from? +
It depends far more on whether the child can sit comfortably than on their age. If you are unsure, call us and describe their hair and their patience — we will tell you honestly what will work.
Will it hurt? +
It should not. We use larger sections and looser tension on children, and we do not braid the hairline tight. If your child says a braid hurts during the appointment, tell us and we will take it out and redo it.
