Box braids are the style the whole category is named after: square parts, uniform sections, a braid that holds its shape for two months. Done properly they are the most versatile protective style there is — up, down, half-up, coloured, curled at the ends.

Done carelessly they are also the style most likely to cost you an edge. The difference is entirely in the parting and the tension.

Clean parts are the whole craft

A box braid set lives or dies on its grid. Uneven sections mean uneven weight, and uneven weight means some follicles carry three times what their neighbours do. That shows up six weeks later as patchy thinning, long after the appointment that caused it.

We part with a comb and measure rather than estimating by feel. It takes longer at the start of the appointment and it is why our sets photograph cleanly from the crown.

The braid itself is anchored firmly but never dragged. If your scalp is tight enough that you can feel it when you raise your eyebrows, the braid is too tight — and we will take it down rather than send you home with it.

Choosing your size and length

Small box braids last longest and give the most styling freedom, at the cost of a longer install. Medium is the most-booked size at this studio: roughly four to five hours, six to eight weeks of wear, light enough to tie up.

Jumbo box braids go in fastest and are the gentlest option on a scalp that needs a break — a reasonable choice for a first protective style or for a client recovering from tension damage.

Length is yours to pick, from bob to waist. Longer sets need more hair and more time; the price moves with both. Add-ons like curled ends, colour blending or beaded finishes are quoted at booking.

Box braids vs knotless braids

Both are protective. The difference is where the weight sits. Box braids anchor with a knot at the root, which holds a crisper part and a tighter-looking finish and costs less in chair time. Knotless braids feed the extension in gradually and put no load on the follicle.

If your edges are healthy and you like a defined, structured look, box braids are the right call. If you have a receding hairline, a tender scalp, or a history of traction damage, book knotless instead — we would rather move you to the style that keeps your hair.

Not sure? Book the 15-minute consultation and we will look at your hairline before anything is installed.

Aftercare

Satin bonnet or scarf every night — cotton pillowcases pull at the braid and frizz the parts within a week. Light oil on the scalp twice weekly, never on the braid length, where it only collects lint.

Wash the scalp every two to three weeks with diluted shampoo in a squeeze bottle, and let the braids dry fully before tying them up. Take them down at eight weeks at the latest.

Book a touch-up around week four if the perimeter and edges need a refresh — it extends the life of the set without a full reinstall.

Box Braids in Gaithersburg — common questions

How much do box braids cost in Gaithersburg, MD? +
From $155 to $270 depending on size and length. Hair is either brought by you or purchased on-site as an add-on. Your exact quote comes with your booking confirmation.
How long do box braids take? +
Four to six hours for most sets. Small braids at waist length run longer, jumbo sets run shorter.
How long do box braids last? +
Six to eight weeks. We do not recommend keeping any braid set past eight weeks — new growth at the root turns a protective style into a tension problem.
Can you braid short or fine hair? +
Usually yes. We need roughly three inches to anchor a braid safely. Fine or fragile hair is better suited to a larger size, and we will say so at consultation rather than force a small set.
